The above tables were my wood project during the month of June 2008. I relocated the banana bush, given to us by our son-in-law, to our back yard in March 2008. HRG. |
ANTIQUE grindstone The grindstone I am using in the photo is over a hundred years old. It has been modified to be motor driven, and I recently replaced the legs with oak to which I added casters (rollers). The casters facilitate movement of the unit, which in its entirety weighs over a hundred pounds. I frequently use the grindstone to sharpen tools, especially my lathe knives I use to turn wood in furniture making, such as the legs on the tables in the left photo. The lower part of the stone is submerged in water. The water is picked up and distributed around the stone as it turns which keeps cool the tool being sharpened, a very keen edge is the result. An overheated tool will tend to lose its temper (hardness), and a dry stone will tend to wear rapidly. I fabricated the water trough out of aluminum flashing and used roofing cement to seal the seams. The hanging bucket catches most of the water that does not return to the trough. |

Walnut china cabinet designed and built by Howard R. Gain is of black walnut from our Doddridge Co., WV farm. We cut and milled the walnut tree on our farm circa 1994. The chinaware displayed on the top and center shelves is pieces from the set we purchased in Munich, Germany during our army assignment in West Germany from March 1965 to December 1967. The chinaware displayed on the second and bottom shelves is pieces from the set I purchased in Yokohama, Japan on my return back to the US from my second tour in South Korea, March 1959. The mountain in the background on the dishes is Mt. Fuji, Japan. HRG

Site of the one-room school which I attended 1935-1938. I walked around the hill above the store and past a huge sugar maple tree for about 200 yards to Alpha School. The school building stood at the below site.
